Executive Director

The Covenant with North Carolina’s Children, Inc., the state’s premier child advocacy organization seeks a Director to coordinate and advance the organization’s work.  A coalition of more than 85 civic groups, professional associations, advocacy organizations, and individuals, the Covenant was formed to advance public policy to benefit children in North Carolina and to put children and youth first in our public and private lives.  The Covenant works on a comprehensive array of issues impacting children, including child welfare, early childhood education, economic security, juvenile justice, health, education, safety, and mental health, development disabilities, and substance abuse. 

Job overview:

The Covenant Director serves as the sole staff member for the organization and provides infrastructure to the organization by managing internal and external communications, coordinating activities of the coalition workgroups, fundraising, and engaging in advocacy around The Covenant’s legislative agenda.  The Director is the “face” of the organization with coalition members, the media, and policymakers.

The Director’s Duties:

• Keeping membership informed and engaged on Covenant’s work and legislative progress
• Coordinating and leading regular Covenant membership meetings and supporting Board of Director meetings
• Maintaining active database of Covenant members
• Producing regular Covenant Action Alerts and online newsletters
• Developing and updating Covenant website
• Fundraising and individual donor cultivation to ensure Covenant’s financial stability
• Maintaining Covenant’s presence in the N.C. General Assembly via relationship-building and direct lobbying when needed
• Coordinating public events and forums as needed

Qualifications:

 The Covenant is seeking an energetic and enterprising individual ready to accept the challenge of renewing the organization’s commitment to policy advocacy on behalf of North Carolina’s children. The individual should be detail-oriented, possess critical thinking skills, and be comfortable working with a diverse membership. 

Specific qualifications include:

• A demonstrated commitment to the shared values of The Covenant to improving the lives of North Carolina’s children
• Superb communication and people skills, as well as the ability to build strong relationships with diverse audiences, including Covenant members, policymakers, and the media
• Experience in non-profit fundraising, including grant-writing and individual donor cultivation
• Excellent and proven writing skills
• Familiarity with the public policy process and the N.C. General Assembly
• Good personal, organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work independently and creatively with minimal supervision as well as  part of a “team”
• Proficient in basic Microsoft Office applications and adaptability to emerging technology.

Candidate should have at least a bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years relevant work experience.
